He graduated from Townsville Teachers College in 1973 and has since then taught continuously until 2013. During his teaching career, he spent time mostly as an upper primary classroom teacher, as well as some time as a Teaching Principal of a small school, a relieving Deputy Principal in a larger school, and teaching in a Distance Education School.
